Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a part of the broad group of diseases called hematological neoplasms. It is also the name of a diverse group of cancers of the lymphatic system, a connecting network of glands, organs and vessels whose principle cell is the lymphocyte. Lymphoma occurs when lymphocytes, the white blood cells that attack infectious invaders, begin to multiply uncontrollably, producing cancerous cells that invade the body. Cancer that affects this system is considered quite serious because it can spread throughout the body via the lymph vessels. Recent advances in medicine have made it more treatable than ever before, however, and there has been much success in defeating it.
One type of lymphoma is called Hodgkin’s disease, named after Dr. T. Hodgkin. All other lymphomas are grouped together and are called non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. Both Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma can occur in the same places and have similar symptoms, which include swollen lymph nodes, night sweats, and extreme fatigue.
Treatment might involve chemotherapy and in some cases radiotherapy or bone marrow transplantation, and lymphomas can be curable depending on the histology, type, and stage of the disease. These malignant cells often originate in lymph nodes, presenting as an enlargement of the node. If abnormal lymphocytes travel from one lymph node to the next or to other organs, the cancer can spread or metastasize. The development outside of lymphatic tissue is called extranodal lymphoma. Extranodal sites include the skin, brain, bowels and bone.
